Retablo

acrylic on board, 20 by 12 inches

Illustration for a short story about a woman who breaks away from a relationship with a drug addict. Inspired by the tradition in rural Mexico of posting paintings (retablos) along the roadside in thanksgiving to God for favors granted. French Acadians in southern Louisiana at the turn of the century left marble plaques inscribed with the word "Merci" (thank you) in churches for a similar purpose.
